“Ferrous Wheel” Abstract Wall Art 005

Description

Abstract wall art using a variety of textures, carving techniques and colors.  Intricate rust patinas and acrylic paint patterns, always with lots of texture and oxidized copper and iron.  Each of these large wall sculptures on my site were either commissioned pieces or designed for specific locations in our home, some of which are show in the images.

About This Abstract Wall Art

This Sculpture is the result of an experiment in construction techniques.  9 steel blades are “captured” between 2 layers of EPS.  The blades connect two different pieces of the sculpture, the center hub and the outside ring.  The beveled sides of each show off the textures and the top of each has a unique negative space technique similar to the design used in Celtic Crosses (you can also see this design technique in one of my triptychs).  Each of the steel blades are heavily oxidizes and augmented by dozens of small scroll designs.  Wonderful color scheme with the turquoise and blue-green paint contrasting with the rust.  One of a kind … I’ll never make another one in this style.

A hanger is included on back that allows for easy wall mounting.

How I Make My Abstract Sculptures

I use recycled polystyrene (also known as Expanded Polystyrene or EPS) as the foundation for my sculptures.  There are wonderful environmental benefits (less plastic in the landfills) and it is an incredible flexible media.  Once I figure out the basic design for a series of pieces, I prep a flat base for the Rust Blocks, canvas for the 3D Paintings or a heavier weighted base and metal armature for the 3D sculptures.  The major construction is adding large and small chunks of EPS to these bases and shaping them with a hot knife, a torch or a heat gun.  Then I use several different materials, including cement, acrylics, sand, rocks and others to produce an intriguing texture.

The finishing includes a variety of metal patinas, acrylic paint, iron and copper (the latter two of which are oxidized). The entire sculpture is then coated with a polyurethane that seals in the final colors and protects it from fading.  More information and videos of my process can be found here on my website.
