About This Large Abstract Wall Sculpture
This Large Wall Sculpture is a triptych using qty. 3 24″ x 24″ crimson squares in series. Each piece has 9 mini-sculptures of carved EPS that was shaped and finished as a single piece and then cut and spaced out on each main slab. These are each finished off with a small olive colored block and a piece of copper colored mirror glass.
Designed to hang horizontally (a shown), hangers are included on back of each segment allowing for easy wall mounting (instructions provided).
How I Make My Abstract Sculptures
I use recycled polystyrene (also known as Expanded Polystyrene or EPS) as the foundation for my sculptures. There are wonderful environmental benefits (less plastic in the landfills) and it is an incredible flexible media. Once I figure out the basic design for a series of pieces, I prep a flat base for the Rust Blocks, canvas for the 3D Paintings or a heavier weighted base and metal armature for the 3D sculptures. The major construction is adding large and small chunks of EPS to these bases and shaping them with a hot knife, a torch or a heat gun. Then I use several different materials, including cement, acrylics, sand, rocks and others to produce an intriguing texture.
The finishing includes a variety of metal patinas, acrylic paint, iron and copper (the latter two of which are oxidized). The entire sculpture is then coated with a polyurethane that seals in the final colors and protects it from fading. More information and videos of my process can be found here on my website.
In refer to my art by many names: upcycled art, mixed media sculpture, 3d wall art, 3D sculpture, rusty art, wall sculpture, abstract wall sculpture, abstract wall décor, repurposed art, textured artwork, wall décor art, eclectic art, contemporary sculpture or polystyrene art (pick whichever ones YOU like!).
One thing it is for sure is unique. There is nothing else like it (that I have found) in the world. Thank you so much for your interest in owning a piece of something special.
